Gregg Popovich has been the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs since 1996, but it may be time for a change.
Next season would mark Pop having coached the Spurs for 25 years — a time period many believe is an entire generation. That’s a long time to remain in one place, and Popovich has already won so much in San Antonio as is. He’s won five championship rings as the Spurs head coach, but the team is currently in the midst of a rebuild, and clearly isn’t going to win another title anytime soon.
As such, many have wondered if it’s time for a change, given the number of highly attractive coaching jobs that recently opened up.
The Nets, for instance, are reportedly making a strong push to acquire Popovich, although they’d need to trade for him to do so. And while Pop has remained quiet about these rumors, they’re really heating up now that he’s put his San Antonio house on the market.
This clearly doesn’t guarantee anything, but it does hint that Popovich may feel it’s time for a change, whether he goes to Brooklyn, or elsewhere. Maybe he’ll even elect to retire. We’ll see how it all plays out.
