Odell Beckham Jr. is fighting for a Giants roster spot less than two years removed from getting cut by the Dolphins, and I need you to sit with how insane that sentence would have sounded in 2024.
Harbaugh’s first season running this Giants team started after eighteen years as the Ravens’ head coach, and after Beckham caught three passes for 53 yards in a 23-6 win over the Jets, Harbaugh said something specific about him: “Yes, he has done enough to make an NFL roster, for sure. He’s played well. He’s gotten better as camp’s gone along. He deserves credit for that. He’s done a really good job with it.” Notice the wording. He said an NFL roster, not the Giants roster, and that gap is worth sitting with before anyone starts writing the fairy-tale ending here.
That single word matters more than it should for a guy who just wants to be back here for good.
I watched that scoreline as a Jets fan with my stomach in a knot, and even I’ll admit Beckham was the best part of a rough night for my team.
The redemption framing isn’t a stretch either. Beckham’s first five NFL seasons, from 2014 through 2018, happened right here before the Giants traded him away. He went to Cleveland, then the Rams for two Super Bowl runs, including a torn ACL in Super Bowl LVI, then stops in Baltimore and Miami before this. Giants fans already gave him the ovation he got walking off the MetLife turf earlier this preseason, which tells you how much people here want this specific story to work out.
The Dolphins release in December 2024 was the actual bottom: nine catches for 55 yards over nine games, a stretch that started with him on the physically-unable-to-perform list recovering from knee surgery. He then sat out the entire 2025 season, unsigned, before the Giants brought him back in June on a make-the-roster deal with no guarantees attached.
Beckham has said what this means to him without much hedging. He’s called it his dream, the place he started, the one franchise he wants to give his whole heart to more than anywhere else in the world. That’s a guy in his thirties admitting, out loud, that this is personal, not contractual. Not everyone let Harbaugh’s phrasing slide, either.

That reaction gets at exactly what stood out to me. Odell Beckham’s redemption bid comes down to Sunday’s roster cuts, not to one compliment from his own head coach, no matter how badly I want it to be that simple. Roster math doesn’t care about a nice quote. Fifty-three is fifty-three whether or not a receiver had a good camp story, and Harbaugh knows that better than anyone reacting to his press conference.
I don’t care that it’s the Giants. I want Beckham on a roster somewhere by Sunday night, and if the team that gets to keep him is the one that made him a star in the first place, I’ll allow it, grudgingly, the way any Jets fan allows something good happening at MetLife that isn’t ours.
