Erling Haaland

Erling Braut Haaland is a Norwegian striker for Manchester City and the most ruthless goalscorer the Premier League has yet measured. Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 he has rewritten the division’s record book — the most goals in a single season (36), the fastest century of goals in league history, and three Golden Boots in four seasons — while anchoring the Manchester City side that completed the treble in 2023. Tall, left-footed and almost comically efficient inside the penalty area, Haaland turned the question of whether he could score in England into a question of how many records would survive the attempt.

Before England: Bryne, Molde and Salzburg

The local start. Haaland was born in Leeds, England, where his father, Alf-Inge Håland, was then playing, before the family returned to Norway. He came through the academy at Bryne, his father’s old club, and broke into senior football at Molde under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, scoring 14 league goals across his spell there and marking himself as the most coveted teenage forward in Scandinavia.

The Salzburg explosion. A move to Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg in January 2019 was where the legend took shape. In roughly half of the 2019-20 campaign he scored 28 goals in 22 games across all competitions. His Champions League debut against Genk in September 2019 produced a first-half hat-trick — the kind of entrance that made the rest of Europe pay attention — and he reached ten goals in the competition faster than any player before him. By the January 2020 window he was gone, sold to Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund

The Bundesliga debut. Haaland’s first touch of German football was a statement. Introduced as a second-half substitute against Augsburg, he scored a hat-trick inside roughly twenty minutes, the fastest debut hat-trick the Bundesliga had seen. The pattern held for two and a half seasons.

The numbers. At Dortmund he scored 62 goals in 67 Bundesliga appearances, and 86 across all competitions in 89 games, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2021. He also kept detonating records in Europe; the run that eventually made him the fastest player to 50 Champions League goals — reached in 49 appearances — began in these years. His €60 million release clause made the only real question which superclub would pay it. In the summer of 2022 the answer was Manchester City.

Manchester City

The arrival. City had chased an elite No. 9 for years; Haaland was the signing that completed Pep Guardiola’s machine. The fit was immediate and the output was absurd.

The debut-season record. In 2022-23 Haaland scored 36 Premier League goals in 35 appearances, erasing the 34-goal single-season mark that Alan Shearer and Andy Cole had each set across 42-game campaigns. He added eight assists, won the Golden Boot, and drove City to the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Champions League — the first treble in English men’s football since Manchester United in 1999. The individual honors followed: Premier League Player of the Season, FWA Footballer of the Year, PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Gerd Müller Trophy, with UEFA naming him its Men’s Player of the Year for 2023.

The record pace. The milestones kept arriving on fast-forward. Haaland was the fastest to 50 Premier League goals, reaching the mark in 48 games, and on December 2, 2025, away at Fulham, he became the fastest player to 100 Premier League goals, hitting the century in his 111th match — 13 fewer than Shearer’s previous record of 124. Of those first 100, 71 came with his left foot and 94 from inside the box.

The Golden Boots. Haaland led the Premier League scoring chart in 2022-23, 2023-24 and again in 2025-26, finishing the last of those on 27 goals, five clear of Brentford’s Igor Thiago. Three Golden Boots in four seasons left him one short of the record four shared by Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah. Through 2025-26 he had scored 112 Premier League goals; five more in the opening weeks of 2026-27 (through October 9, 2026) carried him to 117.

Beyond the league. Haaland is also Norway’s all-time leading scorer, having passed Jørgen Juve’s record in October 2024, and in October 2025 became one of the few men to reach 50 international goals in fewer than 50 caps.

The arguments

System or striker? The oldest debate around Haaland is how much of the goal flood belongs to him and how much to Manchester City. Skeptics, pointing to Guardiola’s chance-creating machine, argue that any elite finisher would gorge on the volume of high-quality opportunities City manufacture, and note that Haaland’s build-up involvement is deliberately minimal. His defenders counter that the finishing itself is historic — a strike every 77 minutes in 2022-23, per The Analyst — and that reducing chances to goals at his rate is precisely the skill. The reference numbers support both readings and settle neither.

The knockout-night question. A second argument concerns the biggest stages. Haaland’s league scoring is beyond dispute, but some observers note that his output has dipped in several Champions League knockout ties and that, through his 100-goal milestone, he had not scored at Anfield. Supporters respond that he already owns a Champions League winner’s medal and the competition’s fastest 50-goal run, and that a handful of quiet away days is thin evidence against a record of that scale.

Records versus the Ballon d’Or. The third debate is about legacy. By October 2026 Haaland had broken scoring records across three leagues yet had not won a Ballon d’Or, which some read as proof that volume scoring is valued below all-around brilliance and deep tournament runs. Others argue that a career still in its mid-twenties, measured against the standards of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, is being judged on a timeline that has barely begun.

Why it matters

Haaland matters because he collapsed the distance between a very good scoring season and the all-time record, and did it in his first year in England. A division that spent three decades treating 30 goals as a monument now has a striker who treats it as a baseline, and whose fastest-to-100 run reframed what elite finishing looks like at scale. Whether history files him as the most efficient goalscorer the Premier League has produced or as the beneficiary of its most dominant team, the arithmetic he left behind — 117 goals and counting, three Golden Boots, a treble — is the kind that settles group-chat arguments rather than starting them.
