Bill Belichick ‘glad’ Patriots were able to sign Cam Newton

The Patriots were able to sign the 2015 MVP on the cheap, and the team’s head coach is pretty happy they were able to do so.

It’s unclear if the market for Cam Newton really was that thin, given that most teams were already set in terms of their starting quarterback, or if the former Panthers signal-caller was just looking to come to a team where he could boost his stock and be in position to win games. Whatever the reason, though, we do know that Newton figures to be an incredible upgrade over unproven quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who has yet to start in a regular-season NFL game.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has yet to have addressed exactly how and why the team was able to sign Newton, but he did speak about it in speaking to reporters on Friday.

“Things worked out,” Belichick said, via ProFootballTalk. “We spent quite a bit of time with Cam, and he spent quite a bit of time with us. I think it was a mutual interest. We [spoke to] quite a . . . number of different people and had a number of different conversations just trying to see how the fit would be. It was very positive on our end, and I’m glad it worked out.”

Newton has yet to truly weigh in about why he signed with the Patriots, aside from a few cryptic social media quotes, so it would be interesting to hear what he has to say about it.
