Angel Reese Blocked Ionescu, Then Stared Her Down

Angel Reese settled her beef with Sabrina Ionescu with a block and a stare, no words necessary. The Dream buried the Liberty 92-82 in Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals today, putting New York in a 1-0 hole before this series even got moving.

New York walked into this series with the best story of the postseason: fresh off the first 8-seed in WNBA history to sweep a 1-seed, a two-game stomping of the Lynx that deserves its own parade no matter what happens the rest of the way. None of that mattered at State Farm Arena tonight, where the No. 4 seed Dream hosted because they earned it. New York is still the No. 8 seed in this bracket, history or not.

Atlanta forced 19 turnovers out of New York, 14 of them live-ball steals the Dream converted straight into points. A team that just made playoff history doesn’t usually bleed the ball like that.

Angel Reese made sure of it.

Reese finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks, exactly what you’d expect from the reigning 2026 Defensive Player of the Year, the first Atlanta Dream player to ever win it. She set the single-season WNBA rebounding record this year, and the award wasn’t close. In the second half tonight, she blocked a Sabrina Ionescu drive clean out of the air, then stood over her without saying a word, and the building rose up and started shaking towels like she’d just robbed somebody.

That stare wasn’t about nothing.

None of this happens without a career-high night that clinched this playoff spot in the first place a few weeks back. The last time these two shared a floor, in the regular-season finale on September 24, Ionescu’s elbow caught Reese in the face late in the second quarter, an incident upgraded to a Flagrant 1 on review. Reese made her free throws and didn’t see the floor again that night, a coaching decision more than a medical one, and she didn’t get to answer back in the moment. Tonight, in a completely different game, she got it.

Reese wasn’t the only problem for New York. Jordin Canada erupted for 25 points, 20 of them after halftime, adding 5 steals of her own and a backbreaking third-quarter three before a transition layup put this one away late. DeWanna Bonner chipped in 23, stepping into a bigger scoring role after Allisha Gray left in the first half with a left hand injury, got looked at, briefly returned, then exited again before halftime diving for a loose ball. Her availability for Game 2 wasn’t confirmed as of this writing.

Atlanta trailed by three at halftime and buried the Liberty under a 32-15 third quarter that flipped the entire game.

Credit where it’s due: Ionescu still dropped 27 and Breanna Stewart added 19, and this is a best-of-five, not a coronation. One bad turnover night on the road doesn’t erase three weeks that just rewrote WNBA history. It just means Game 2 matters a lot more than it did yesterday.

Reese, for her part, wasn’t exactly staying humble about it:

Game 2 is Wednesday. Same building. Bring more towels.
