Atlanta named Tua Tagovailoa its Week 1 starter over Michael Penix Jr. on Monday, and I don’t buy for one second that this is about Tua being the better quarterback.
Schefter and Rapoport had the news within minutes of each other: Tua starts the opener at Pittsburgh, Penix is inactive, and the Falcons are framing it like a competition anyone could’ve lost. That framing only holds up if you ignore why Penix isn’t active in the first place.
Penix tore his ACL in November, his third full ACL reconstruction, and wasn’t cleared for 11-on-11 work until August 22nd.
Schefter put it about as plainly as a reporter can without saying it outright: Penix’s “turn likely is coming this season, but for now, the Falcons are going with Tua Tagovailoa.” Kevin Stefanski’s new staff has zero history with Penix, the 8th overall pick a year ago, so there’s nobody in that building with a personal stake in rushing him back early. Atlanta swore all summer this was a real battle, and the unresolved competition all summer just resolved itself for reasons that have nothing to do with a practice-field battle.
Tua Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal with Atlanta in March after Miami released him — not traded him, a distinction Dolphins fans will die on this hill about forever. He threw for 2,660 yards and 20 touchdowns last season and went 32-19 as a starter across four healthy years in Miami before that front office moved on anyway. He’s also Atlanta’s sixth different Week 1 starter since 2021, which says a lot more about that franchise’s quarterback room than it does about him.
Then there’s the actual headline underneath the headline: Tua’s first start comes against Aaron Rodgers, in his last ride in Pittsburgh, with the Steelers favored by three and a half.
As a Jets fan, I watched Rodgers set an entire season on fire in four snaps back in 2023, and I watched the golf cart video separately, weeks later, trying to make sense of it like everyone else. Pittsburgh gets a healthy version of that same quarterback for one final farewell lap, against a Falcons offense breaking in a new starter under center. I am not built to trust storybook endings involving Aaron Rodgers, and Atlanta just volunteered to be part of one.

“His turn likely is coming.” That’s an admission with a deadline attached, not a scouting report.
That said, if Tua plays like the guy who beat teams with his legs and his touch in Miami, this stops looking like an admission and starts looking like a shrewd bridge move. Bijan Robinson isn’t a rookie project waiting on him, either. Atlanta has an offense already built around Bijan Robinson, and a competent game manager might be all it takes to make that machine hum in September.
Atlanta spent all summer selling a quarterback competition that a knee decided the moment Penix went down in November. Tua gets Rodgers’ farewell tour as his welcome to Atlanta, and nobody in that building wants to admit whose health actually made the choice for them.
