Rutgers paid UMass $1.55 million to walk into SHI Stadium and take a loss Thursday night. UMass never got the memo, beat Rutgers outright as a 29.5-point underdog, 37-21, and snapped the longest active losing streak in college football doing it.

Somewhere in Piscataway, an athletic department cut a seven-figure check for a win it just got physically removed from.

Dave Portnoy made this worse for himself in real time. He posted hours before kickoff that his “1st bet of the college football season” was also his “strongest play of the year”: Rutgers -29.5, needing the Scarlet Knights to beat UMass “by 40 plus.” He was conceding before halftime.

That’s a guy publicly staking his season on the exact opposite outcome, on the same field, in the same 60 minutes.

Rutgers led 7-0 in the first quarter, which turned out to be the last thing that went according to plan. UMass answered with four straight scoring drives, reeled off 30 unanswered points, and by the time anyone in Piscataway had processed what was happening, the Minutemen were up two scores with a defense that had already forced four turnovers.

Pop Watson III, the Virginia Tech transfer running UMass’s offense, threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns and added 40 more on the ground. The UMass defense piled up seven tackles for loss, five sacks, and three interceptions, and held Rutgers to 1.2 yards a carry.

This from a program that hadn’t beaten an FBS opponent since Army back in October 2023, hadn’t beaten a Big Ten team in nine tries, and hadn’t beaten a power-conference opponent since 1978. CBS Sports has it as the fifth-largest upset by a 25-plus-point favorite since 2000, and for good reason: teams favored by 29 or more points had gone a perfect 213-0 since 2024 before Thursday.

I went to Rutgers for two years before I dropped out to go run a sports blog nobody read, so I feel qualified to say this is the single most Rutgers thing that has ever happened to that football program. And Rutgers wasn’t even the one who won.

None of that matters if you don’t understand this: guarantee games exist so Power Four programs can bank a win with zero real risk, cutting a check to a mid-major that needs the money more than it needs the loss. UMass, at 16 straight FBS losses and no Power Four win since it moved up to the level in 2012, was about as safe a bought win as this sport offers, and it’s the same parity problem that’s been creeping into Week 0 all season. When that kind of game turns into a 16-point loss on national television, it says a lot less about UMass suddenly being good than it does about how shaky the “sure thing” actually was.

That said, $1.55 million and 500 comp tickets is still a good deal for a UMass program that probably needed both more than it needed a moral victory. If I were running that athletic department, I’d take the same check and the same odds every single time.

Bettors already know this feeling. It’s the same underdog logic that’s already burned bettors this season, and Portnoy just became the highest-profile guy to learn it the hard way, on his own show, with his own money.

Portnoy has already called this one of the most embarrassing bets in Barstool history, which is fair.

Rutgers wrote a $1.55 million check to buy a win, and the only guys smiling about it Thursday night were up in Amherst.
