Angels veteran Albert Pujols is making sure the salaries of the affected workers in the Dominican Republic are covered, though, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Furloughs hit approximately 90% of the team’s academy in Boca Chica, where many Latino prospects begin their careers in the organization, per the Times. Pujols’ $180,000 donation is expected to cover the furloughed staff members in the country for five months.
Pujols’ donation came after a conversation with Angels general manager Billy Eppler, the Times reported. He was due to make $29 million this season before the coronavirus pandemic upended the sports world.
While the league has not released anything official, the minor league season is effectively canceled.
