The Bucks were the most disappointing team in the NBA this season, in terms of their overall results, and yet it appears their head coach will retain his job.
Milwaukee may have boasted the best regular-season record in the NFL, at 56-17, but that means nothing, as the team won only five playoff games — four of which came agains the undermanned Magic — and flamed out in the second round. That’s a major disappointment, no matter how you slice it, despite the Sixers being in that conversation as well, given how they underperformed this season.
And it’s clear that the Bucks window is closing. The team ran into Kawhi Leonard — the best player in the world — last year, and failed to reach the NBA Finals. This year was even worse, in terms of what they accomplished. And now they face the possibility of Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving next year in free agency. Their window is quite small.
But somehow, it appears head coach Mike Budenholzer will keep his job, as Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the team plans to retain him.
Budenholzer has never been a good big-game coach, and he was outcoached by Nick Nurse last season, and Erik Spoelstra this particular one. But it’s likely that Antetokounmpo gave him a vote of confidence, and that’s why he’ll probably be returning in the future. It’s a superstar-driven league, as the Nets’ decision to hire Steve Nash clearly shows.
