Adam Gase may be viewed as the worst head coach in the NFL, but Anthony Lynn continues to give him a run for his money.
Gase has made some head-scratching decisions during his tenure as head coach of the Jets, but New York’s roster is also the worst in the NFL. Lynn, on the other hand, has the benefit of the best rookie quarterback in the league, with a solid defense as well.
And yet, somehow, the Chargers lost yet another game on Sunday, dropping to 3-8 on the season. They remain in last place in the AFC West standings.
But it’s the way they lost Sunday’s showdown to the Bills that deserves criticism.
Herbert completed a miraculous pass on 4th-and-27 with under a minute remaining, giving the Chargers a chance to cut the Bills’ lead to a field goal, trailing by ten points. Lynn, however, relinquished any chance of them doing so, calling a run play, with Austin Ekeler getting tackled at the one-yard line — bleeding nearly the entire clock in doing so.
And then, on the final play of the game, Herbert tried to sneak it in, while his offensive linemen clearly thought he was going to drop back to pass — leaving us wondering how the coaching staff’s call could be viewed as ambiguous in that spot.
Lynn may be a great guy, but organizations don’t win by playing nice. The Chargers should relieve him of his duties immediately. It’s time for a change.
