It’s possible that up to one-third of the NBA’s teams will make a pitch to Giannis Antetokounmpo should he enter free agency next year, and one particular analyst believes there’s a team that may have a leg up on the others.
Giannis is eligible to sign a supermax extension with the Mavericks this year, but it appears highly unlikely that’ll happen. For one, the Bucks have continued to underperform in the playoffs, and he may want to give it one more year to see if they can take the next step to the NBA Finals. Not only that, it’s certainly possible that he’ll want to test the market and weigh his options, especially since so many teams are rumored to be interested in his services.
Even the Miami Heat have emerged as a potential suitor, given all the young assets and veteran talent they have on their roster, as well as cap space. But ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes the Dallas Mavericks have a leg up on everyone else, which he stated on “The Jump.”
The Miami Heat are a team that a lot of people look at as trying to get Giannis Antetokounmpo out of Milwaukee. The Dallas Mavericks, to me, are going to be really at the front of that line.
Of course, every team wants Antetokounmpo. But many teams believe they have no chance of getting him and therefore won’t pursue him.
Given what we’ve seen from Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis thus far in their careers, it’s easy to see the Mavs as an attractive landing spot for Antetokounmpo.
