The Wizards aren’t necessarily rebuilding, but one of the two stars in their starting lineup may not want to be in Washington any longer, which makes their situation interesting.
John Wall had been the team’s leader in the backcourt, up until his string of recent injuries, which caused him to miss the majority of the past two seasons. It’s Bradley Beal’s team now, and he may be fully aware of it.
Wall didn’t suit up to play for the team in the Orlando bubble, even though some in the NBA world intimated that he was healthy enough to do so, as he’d been recovering from surgery to fix a torn Achilles. And he may not want to play for the team in the near future, either, as a recent report from Shams Charania of The Athletic suggests he wants out of Washington.
It seemed as if the trade talks involving Russell Westbrook and John Wall was more of a fantasy GM-type dream when those rumors first began circulating, but apparently, there was some validity to them. Both players have contracts that make them extremely difficult to trade, though, as Wall is due $138 million over the next three seasons, while Westbrook is set to make $85 million in two, with a player option for 2022.
This particular bit of news makes the Wizards an interesting team to watch in the coming weeks, now that the free-agent market has opened.
