It had been awhile since Draymond Green delivered a scorching-hot take, so he made up for lost time this week.
Green simply hasn’t been the same player the last two seasons, with injuries likely having played a role, as well as the fact that the Warriors aren’t good right now, and are probably looking more toward the future than the present.
Whatever the reason, though, Green isn’t the same force on the defensive end he once was. Green was viewed as the best defender in the league back in 2017, when he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. But it’s been downhill since, and he’s not even in the top 10 anymore. Guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Myles Turner are leaps and bounds better than Green, yet he somehow believes he’s the GOAT defender — comparing himself to defensive legends past and present.
“You know, I can go all around the league and find good defenders, I just don’t think any of them are as good as me,” Green said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think I’m the best defender to ever play this game. One hundred percent. That’s my opinion.”
He continued:
“I also think I view the game a lot differently than most people view the game because I think I just see it from a different perspective. I think when you look at the things that make a good defender: Reaction time, toughness, being able to see the picture long before it develops, and most importantly, in order to finish a defensive possession, you got to rebound, and I think I rebound well.”
It’s great to know Green believes in his abilities, but he’s dead wrong here.
