Baker Mayfield is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but it sure doesn’t look like he’s thinking about his future in Cleveland.
Mayfield’s had quite an interesting career, as he burst onto the scene as a rookie, then had a sophomore slump. The first half of last season wasn’t much better, until Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a season-ending injury, which allowed Mayfield to spread the ball around, and also force the Browns to lean on their potent rushing attack.
So now Mayfield enters this upcoming season hoping to pick up where he left off in the playoffs. It’s a similar situation as two years ago, except hopefully this time he focuses more on his development, rather than shooting silly insurance commercials.
In the meantime, he’s already getting questions from reporters about what’s in the pipeline, specifically the possibility of getting awarded a contract extension by the Browns. It sure looks like a make-or-break season for him, so Cleveland will most likely take a wait-and-see approach. And Mayfield doesn’t seem too upset about it.
It looks like Mayfield’s head is in the right place, so hopefully he can continue to build on the momentum he and his teammates established last season.
