Kyle Shanahan shoots down talk of Nick Mullens replacing Jimmy Garoppolo after return from injury

The 49ers have a new quarterback under center, and despite Jimmy Garoppolo’s struggles at times in crunch time of big games, it appears the move will only be temporary.

Nick Mullens made waves in his rookie season, when he put up big numbers throwing to a patchwork receiving corps. He picked up where he left off In Sunday’s win over the Giants, completing 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards, with one touchdown, and no turnovers.

It’s fair to point out that Mullens may have benefited from going up against a porous Giants defense, but the numbers are what they are. If you ask head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, Garoppolo doesn’t need to worry about losing his job when he’s cleared to return from his knee injury.

Jimmy G may become the starter once again when he’s healthy, but don’t be surprised if the 49ers don’t look to rush him back on the field, especially if Mullens continues to cook.
