Everyone watching Sunday’s Week 2 game at MetLife Stadium saw the Jets with an easy opportunity to pick up a first down on a fourth-and-1 situation, as the 49ers were not set at the line.
Unfortunately for them, their quarterback, who continues to be babied by the team’s head coach, did not have the flexibility to call a sneak at the line.
It really is unbelievable, as Sam Darnold is in his third season as the team’s quarterback. He’s sat and watched, and also played plenty of snaps, and it’s time for the handcuffs to come off. This is a make-or-break year for him, and he’s no longer a rookie, so he should be given all the flexibility that comes along with being a starter.
And yet, when he saw a surefire first down, he couldn’t simply lunge forward to pick it up, as he apparently didn’t have the approval of head coach Adam Gase.
It’s time for the Jets to bring in a head coach that lets Darnold cook, so the team knows whether he truly is their franchise quarterback going forward.
